FV = PMT × ((1 + r)n − 1) / r

Donde:

  • FV — capital final (Future Value)
  • PMT — aportación mensual (Payment)
  • r — tipo de interés mensual = tipo anual / 12
  • n — número de meses

Ejemplo paso a paso: 200 €/mes, 7 % anual, 20 años

  1. Tipo mensual: r = 7 % / 12 = 0,5833 % = 0,005833
  2. Número de meses: n = 20 × 12 = 240
  3. (1 + r)n = (1,005833)240 = 4,0387
  4. FV = 200 × (4,0387 − 1) / 0,005833 = 200 × 520,93 = 104.187 €

The compound interest formula with monthly contributions

When you make regular equal contributions (an annuity), the standard compound interest formula is extended. For end-of-month contributions:

FV = PMT × ((1 + r)n − 1) / r

Where:

  • FV — final capital (Future Value)
  • PMT — monthly contribution (Payment)
  • rmonthly interest rate = annual rate / 12
  • n — number of months

Step-by-step example: €200/month, 7% annual, 20 years

  1. Monthly rate: r = 7% / 12 = 0.5833% = 0.005833
  2. Number of months: n = 20 × 12 = 240
  3. (1 + r)n = (1.005833)240 = 4.0387
  4. FV = 200 × (4.0387 − 1) / 0.005833 = 200 × 520.93 = €104,187

Of that final capital, €48,000 came from your contributions (200 × 240 months) and €56,187 was generated by compound interest — interest earning interest. That is the "snowball effect".

If you also have an initial lump sum (P), add the second term: FVtotal = P × (1 + r)n + PMT × ((1 + r)n − 1) / r.

Capitalización mensual frente a anual: ¿cuánto importa?

Monthly vs annual compounding: does it matter?

In practice, index funds and ETFs compound continuously, but monthly compounding (n=12) is the standard model because it matches the contribution frequency. The difference between monthly and annual compounding for the same nominal rate is small but favourable:

  • 7% annual, annual compounding (n=1): effective annual rate (EAR) is exactly 7%.
  • 7% annual, monthly compounding (n=12): EAR = (1 + 0.07/12)12 − 1 = 7.229%.

For €200/month over 20 years, that difference amounts to roughly €1,200 more in final capital with monthly compounding. Over longer horizons the gap widens. All calculations on this page use monthly compounding, the industry standard for index funds and pension plans.

How to automate monthly contributions

The biggest risk of a regular investment plan is forgetting to contribute. Automating the process removes that risk and also avoids the temptation to wait for the "perfect moment" to invest — no one consistently times the market.

  • Index funds with direct debit: platforms like Indexa Capital, Finizens or MyInvestor let you schedule automatic monthly contributions from as little as €10-50 at no extra cost.
  • ETFs via broker: Interactive Brokers, Trade Republic or XTB support recurring orders. Check that the buy commission does not eat into returns for small contributions (look for zero-commission or max €1 per order).
  • Pension plans: direct-debit contributions are native to all pension schemes. The tax benefit (IRPF deduction) can effectively boost net overall returns.
  • Emergency fund first: before automating investments, ensure you have 3-6 months of expenses in a remunerated account or money-market fund. Never invest money you might need within 3-5 years.

The power of time: starting at 25 vs 35

The most important variable in compound interest with regular contributions is not the return rate but time. This table illustrates it clearly: €200/month at 7% annual until age 65.

Empieza a los 25Starts at 25 Empieza a los 35Starts at 35
Años de inversiónYears invested 40 30
Total aportadoTotal contributed 96.000 € 72.000 €
Intereses generadosInterest earned 429.140 € 171.860 €
Capital finalFinal capital 525.140 € 243.860 €

Starting at 25 means contributing only €24,000 more than starting at 35, yet ending with more than double the capital. The extra 10 years of compounding generate an additional €281,280. That is the real cost of waiting until you "have more money".

If you start at 35 and want to reach the same final capital, you would need to contribute approximately €430/month (roughly double) over the remaining 30 years, or accept a significantly higher return target (with greater risk).

  • 2-3 % — Depósitos, cuentas remuneradas, deuda soberana a corto plazo (bajo riesgo).

What annual return should I use in the simulator?

Future returns are uncertain. As a historical and indicative reference:

  • 2-3% — Savings accounts, short-term government bonds (low risk).
  • 4-5% — Real (inflation-adjusted) long-term estimate for global index funds.
  • 7% — Historical nominal average of MSCI World and S&P 500 in euros since 1970 (not inflation-adjusted).
  • 9-10% — Historical nominal average of S&P 500 in USD since 1926 (not reliably extrapolable to the future).

For conservative, realistic projections use 4-6%. To illustrate the historical potential of global markets use 7%. Never use the best historical years as a baseline.

Preguntas frecuentes

How does compound interest work with monthly contributions?

Each month your contribution is added to the accumulated capital. Interest for the next period is then calculated on the full total (capital + previous interest + new contribution). Interest compounds on itself: interest earns interest, and the longer the time horizon, the more powerful the effect. The formula is FV = PMT × ((1 + r)^n − 1) / r, where r is the monthly rate and n the total months.

What annual return should I use for monthly compound interest?

For conservative estimates use 4-5% annual (historical real return of global index funds after inflation). For the historical nominal return of global markets use 7% annual. Never project using the best historical years as a baseline: future returns are uncertain and may be lower than historical averages.

How much do you end up with at €200/month for 20 years?

At 7% annual with monthly compounding, €200/month over 20 years gives €104,187. Total contributed is €48,000 and interest earned is €56,187. At 4% the result would be €73,397; at 6%, roughly €92,402. Over 30 years at 7%, the capital would reach €243,860.
